A pool's interior finish doesn't last forever. On average, plaster lasts 8 - 12 years before it needs attention. Here are five signs it's time to consider resurfacing.
1. Rough or abrasive surfaces
If the floor or walls scratch your feet, the finish has eroded and become porous. Beyond being uncomfortable, a rough surface harbors algae and is harder to keep clean.
2. Persistent stains
Stains that won't brush or acid-wash away have penetrated the surface. A fresh finish gives you a clean slate.
3. Chips, cracks & flaking
Flaking plaster (called spalling) and surface cracks let water reach the structure underneath, which can lead to bigger, costlier problems.
4. Constant chemical struggles
An old, porous surface makes it much harder to keep your water balanced, driving up your chemical costs.
5. It just looks tired
Sometimes the surface is simply dated. Modern pebble and quartz finishes look stunning and last far longer than traditional plaster.
